Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816) was an Irish-born playwright, poet, and politician whose sharp wit and mastery of comic dialogue secured him a central place in eighteenth-century British drama. Best known for his plays The Rivals (1775) and The School for Scandal (1777), Sheridan revitalized Restoration comedy through a blend of moral insight, social satire, and linguistic brilliance. Beyond the theater, Sheridan was a prominent Whig parliamentarian and orator, whose political career paralleled his literary achievements.
