First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by Earl Warren, "For Dr. Robert Hutchins, with the best wishes and high regards of Earl Warren." Also inscribed by the editor Henry M. Christman, "To Robert M. Hutchins- The man who made this book possible- with the keen admiration of the editor Henry M. Christman." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Robert Hutchins was an American educational philosopher, dean of Yale Law School (1927–1929), and president (1929–1945) and chancellor (1945–1951) of the University of Chicago. Books signed and inscribed by Chief Justice Warren are rare, copies with such an association more so.
Earl Warren was the 14th Chief Justice of the United States (1953–1969). He made the Supreme Court a power center on a more even basis with Congress and the Presidency, especially through four landmark decisions: Brown v. Board of Education (1954), Gideon v. Wainwright (1963), Reynolds v. Sims (1964), and Miranda v. Arizona (1966).
