First edition in book form of “the most perfect of all the Dickens novels” (Virginia Woolf) with the first state engraved title page with date and all first issue points noted by Smith except for 'screamed' corrected to 'screwed' on p.132, line 20 (as usual). Octavo, bound in full polished calf by Bumpus with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, triple gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and elaborate inner dentelles, all edges gilt, engraved frontispiece, additional engraved vignette title-page, and 38 plates after Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] including the second of Browne's "dark plates" ("The River," at page 482— the first dark-plate appeared in Dombey and Son). Armorial bookplate to the pastedown. In fine condition. Housed in a custom marbled slipcase.
