The Mind's Sky: Human Intelligence in a Cosmic Context.

First Edition of Timothy Ferris's The Mind's Sky; Signed by Him
First edition of the science writer's inquiry into the human mind set against the scale of the universe, asking what intelligence is, how we would recognize it in something not ourselves, and what we could possibly find to say to it. Octavo, original blue half-cloth. Boldly signed by Timothy Ferris on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Chris Hopkins.
The Mind's Sky (1992) turns from the history of cosmology, the subject of Ferris's Coming of Age in the Milky Way, to the observer doing the looking. Ferris sets the architecture of the human brain beside the architecture of the universe and works through what follows, the split between the hemispheres and the narrative the mind builds to reconcile them, the question of whether consciousness is a thing that could be detected at a distance, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and the problem of what two minds with no shared history could ever exchange. Timothy Ferris is among the most celebrated science writers of his generation, the author of a dozen books and the producer of the Voyager Golden Record, the phonograph record of the sounds and music of Earth carried into interstellar space aboard the Voyager spacecraft, which remains the furthest traveled artifact of human culture. Coming of Age in the Milky Way was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award, and Ferris has written for The New Yorker, Time, and The New York Review of Books alongside his work in television and radio.
