Olga S. Greenlaw’s The Lady and the Tigers (1943) is a rare firsthand account of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), better known as the “Flying Tigers,” from the perspective of its only female staff member. As the wife of Major Harvey Greenlaw, Chennault’s executive officer, Greenlaw chronicled the daily life, hardships, and exploits of the AVG in wartime China, providing a uniquely intimate and gendered view of a predominantly male combat environment. "It takes a woman to bring the real flying difficulties in China home to us...In this book you really learn what flying life out there was like...the courage, resourcefulness and endurance of the lads who flew to protect the Burma road" (Harry Hansen).
