The Humourist, a Companion for the Christmas Fireside by W. H. Harrison is a mid-nineteenth-century miscellany that exemplifies the Victorian taste for seasonal literary entertainment. Published in multiple volumes between 1831 and 1832, it sought to provide readers with a blend of wit, anecdote, satire, and light moral reflection suited to convivial holiday gatherings. Harrison compiled and edited a diverse range of humorous sketches, verses, and tales, presenting them as a kind of literary fireside companion that echoed the period’s emphasis on sociability and domestic festivity.
