First Edition of The Holocaust in Romania; Inscribed by Radu Ioanid to His Teacher Elie Wiesel
First edition of the definitive history of the destruction of Romanian Jewry and Roma under the wartime dictatorship of Ion Antonescu. Octavo, original half cloth, published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page to his teacher, the Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, “To my Professor, Elie Wiesel, with gratitude. R Ioanid January 31, 2000.” The recipient, Elie Wiesel, was a Romanian-born Jewish-American writer, professor, political activist, and Nobel laureate whose life and work were defined by his experience as a survivor of the Holocaust and his lifelong commitment to ensuring that the crimes of the Nazi era would never be forgotten or minimized. Deported to Auschwitz in 1944 at the age of fifteen and subsequently transferred to Buchenwald, where he was liberated by American forces in April 1945, Wiesel emerged from the camps as one of the twentieth century’s most essential moral witnesses, a role he would occupy for the remaining seven decades of his life. His 1960 memoir Night, originally written in Yiddish and published in French as La Nuit in 1958, stands as one of the most widely read and taught accounts of the Holocaust ever written, a work of spare, devastating testimony that has sold millions of copies and been translated into more than thirty languages. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, Wiesel was described by the Nobel Committee as a messenger to mankind and a human being dedicated to humanity, and he received the United States Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. From the library of Elie Wiesel. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. With a foreword by Elie Wiesel and a preface by Paul A. Shapiro. Translated from the French by Marc J. Masurovsky.
The Holocaust in Romania is the definitive scholarly account of the destruction of Romanian and Romani Jewry under the wartime regime of Marshal Ion Antonescu, Nazi Germany’s ally, whose government was responsible for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews, along with thousands of Roma, in Romania and the territories it occupied. Drawing on archives opened after the fall of Communism, the Romanian-born historian Radu Ioanid documents the pogrom at Iasi, the deportations to Transnistria, and the mass killings that made Romania responsible for more Jewish deaths than any Axis country other than Germany itself. Issued in English in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where Ioanid long directed its international programs, the book remains a foundational work on a chapter of the Holocaust that was for decades neglected and officially denied. It carries a foreword by Elie Wiesel, himself born in the Transylvanian town of Sighet and deported to Auschwitz in 1944.
