J. M. Keynes’s The Economic Consequences of Mr. Churchill (1925) is a sharply argued critique of Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill’s decision to return Britain to the prewar gold standard at the 1925 parity, a move Keynes believed would overvalue the pound, suppress exports, and deepen unemployment. Written with Keynes’s characteristic blend of economic analysis and political polemic, the pamphlet situates Churchill’s policy within a broader failure to recognize structural changes in the post–World War I global economy, particularly the altered relationship between wages, productivity, and international competitiveness. Keynes contends that the deflationary pressures imposed by the restored parity would not restore British prestige, as its proponents hoped, but instead worsen industrial relations and prolong economic stagnation—predictions that proved largely prescient as the 1920s economy faltered.
