Eliza Smith was one of the most popular female cookery book writers of the 18th century. Her book, 'The Compleat Housewife,' went through 18 editions in England, sporting the name "E__ S__" prior to her passing, and "E. Smith" after. It became the first cookery book to be published in the Thirteen Colonies of America, containing the first published recipe for "katchup," and appears to be the earliest written source for bread and butter pudding.
