"She met, after an instant, his look, and the wan loveliness and stillness of her own had never been greater": first edition of Henry James' The Awkward Age
First edition of James' classic novel of a girl coming of age in high English society at the turn of the 20th century. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine and front panel. In very good condition.
First published as a serial in Harper's Weekly between 1898 and 1899, The Awkward Age follows the progression of Nanda Brookenham as she navigates her mother's complicated and often surprisingly sleazy social circles. Cast almost entirely in dialogue, the novel relays James' sentiments regarding what he saw as the increasing irresponsibility and immorality of high English society.
