Second edition of Voltaire's history of the reign of Louis XIV. Octavo, two volumes, bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, red morocco spine labels, raised ruled bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, dentelles, engraved frontispiece portrait of Louis XIV in Volume I, engraved frontispiece of a scene from Virgil's Aeneid in Volume II. In very good condition.
Although he feared he might not live long enough to finish the project, Voltaire completed his history of the reign of King Louis XIV in 1751 after studying two hundred volumes of material including historical documents he discovered in the archives of the Louvre. In the text, he presented the reign of Louis the XIV as the fourth and greatest "Age of Light", following the ages of Alexander the Great and Pericles, Caesar and Augustus, and the Italian Renaissance.
