The Esquisse d'une théorie des émotions was first published in Paris in 1939 when Sartre was thirty-four. "The essay is the best source for Sartre's theoretical views on the nature of psychology, and it contains doctrines which were later incorporated, though without full discussion of their origin, in his major work L'Etre et le Neant (Being and Nothingness)" (Mary Warnock, Preface to this edition).
