First edition of this famous photobook showing views of Shanghai, including the international settlement's imposing architecture, expansive boulevards, and bustling streets. Quarto, original cloth-backed flexible boards, front panel stamped and lettered in red and gilt with mounted collotype panorama of Shanghai Municipal Council building within printed red border, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with 38 Van Dyke prints in a variety of tones, some full-page, all tipped-in within printed decorative borders. Introduction by Owen Mortimer Green. Later editions included 50 photographs. The Shanghai International Settlement was established following the defeat of the Qing army in the First Opium War, after which a treaty was established, opening the city's five treaty ports to foreign merchants. In near fine condition.
