First edition of this scarce pictorial album of the views of Shanghai. Quarto, original cloth-backed flexible boards, with 38 tipped-in photographs, front stamped and lettered in red on a gilt background, mounted photo label. Introduction by Owen Mortimer Green. Later editions included 50 photographs. In very good condition.
The Shanghai International Settlement was established following the defeat of the Qing army in the First Opium War after which a treaty was established opening the city’s five treaty ports to foreign merchants.
