"Imperative there should be loyalty": First Edition of Winston Churchill's Secret Session Speeches; Signed by Him
First edition of Churchill's secret session speeches. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Winston S. Churchill on the front free endpaper. On the pastedown is a letter on House of Commons letterhead to the recipient, Dr Max Hausdorff of Lugano, Switzerland from Churchill's secretary stating he has signed the book. It reads "5th March, 1948. Dear Sir, I am writing on behalf of Mr. Churchill to acknowledge your letter of the second of February. Mr. Churchill regrets that his latest book is not yet published. Instead he is sending you herewith a copy of his "Secret Session Speeches, endorsed by himself." Hausdorff spied for the allies during the war and Churchill's gift of a signed book was a recognition of that fact. Compiled by Charles Eade. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. An excellent example with noted provenance.
Churchill’s speeches “constitute a contemporary history of the war which is as lively as it is authoritative; and, so far as contemporary history is of value, they may be said to be the last word upon the war” (Randolph S. Churchill).
