“Come to me in my dreams, and then By day I shall be well again! For so the night will more than pay The hopeless longings of the day": The Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold; finely bound in full polished tree calf
Finely bound example of Arnold's collected poetical works. Octavo, bound in full polished tree calf, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt scrolling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In near fine condition. A beautiful example.
English poet and cultural critic Matthew Arnold published his first book of poetry, The Strayed Reveller, in 1849 and his second volume of poems, Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems in 1852. A sage writer, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1857, and he was the first in this position to deliver his lectures in English rather than in Latin.
