“A Virtuoso in Verse”: Signed Limited Edition of Rudyard Kipling’s Collected Poems 1886-1929
Signed limited edition of the definitive collection of Kipling’s poetry. Quarto, three volumes, original parchment over boards with a gilt medallion to the front covers and red paper labels to the spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, the others uncut. One of 525 copies, this is number 357. Boldly signed by Kipling on the limitation page. In very good condition with darkening to the spines, soiling, and toning. Ownership plates to the front pastedown and front free endpaper of each volume. One of the finest editions of Kipling’s verse.
“As a virtuoso in verse [Kipling] had more than one style at his command” (Baugh et al., 1505), from earnest cockney dialect to soaring prophetic proclamation. This handsome three-volume collection presents all of Kipling’s poetry, including such memorable works as “Mandalay,” “Gunga Din” and “If,” set in Baskerville type and printed on handmade paper at the Chiswick Press. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), born in Bombay, was among the most popular and influential writers in the English language, the author of The Jungle Book, Kim, the Just So Stories, and the Barrack-Room Ballads, and in 1907 became the first writer in English to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. This collected edition, published in 1930 toward the end of his life, gathers the poetry of more than four decades into its most complete and handsome form, and remains among the most desirable of all editions of his verse.
