First edition of this classic in American travel literature. Octavo, original illustrated cloth, frontispiece with tissue guard, pictorial endpapers, illustrations by the author throughout. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Faithfully yours, Ernest Peixotto New York September 1927." In near fine condition.  A very sharp example.    
American artist, muralist and travel author Ernest Clifford Peixotto wrote and illustrated a dozen travel books throughout his lifetime including Tales of Languedoc, By Italian Seas, Romantic California and Our Hispanic Southwest. Born in San Francisco, Peixotto married fellow American painter Mary Glascock Hutchinson in 1897 and the couple took up a primary residence in Fontainebleau outside of Paris, France. He later taught at the Art Institue of Chicago where Thomas Hart Benton was his student, served as a captain in the Army Corps of Engineers, an official artist attached to the American expeditionary force, and President of the National Society of Mural Painters.
