First edition, first issue of Dr. Seuss's classic alphabet book. Quarto, original pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, illustrated. Near fine in a very good first issue dust jacket with the 250/250 price on the jacket flap and ten titles on the rear panel. Uncommon in this condition. One of the notorious six discontinued Seuss titles.
Dr. Seuss’s On Beyond Zebra! (1955) challenged conventional notions of language and imagination through its playful expansion of the alphabet. By introducing fictitious letters beyond “Z,” Seuss critiqued the limitations of standardized thinking and celebrated creative exploration. The narrator, young Conrad Cornelius o'Donald O'Dell, initially believed he had mastered the alphabet, only to be shown by another boy that real discovery began where conventional knowledge ended. The invented letters, each tied to a whimsical creature, illustrated Seuss’s broader themes of intellectual curiosity and the subversive power of imagination. This post-alphabetic structure functioned as a metaphor for unbounded creativity, urging readers—especially children—to envision possibilities beyond the established order. On March 2, 2021, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, owner of the rights to Seuss's works, withdrew On Beyond Zebra! and five other books from publication. The Vancouver Sun described the "problematic imagery" as "probably the least obvious" of the six books removed from publication.
