Rare 18th century set of French philosopher Pierre Bayle's magnum opus, a historical and critical dictionary. Folio, 5 volumes, bound in full contemporary calf, raised bands, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. An attractive set.
Pierre Bayle was a French philosopher and writer best known for his seminal work the Historical and Critical Dictionary, published beginning in 1697. Bayle was a Calvinist Protestant (French Huguenot). As a forerunner of the Encyclopedists and an advocate of the principle of the toleration of divergent beliefs, his works subsequently influenced the development of the Enlightenment.
