First edition of Lyndon B. Johnson's My Hope For America; inscribed by him
First edition of Johnson's work discussing his philosophy of government. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Lyndon B. Johnson on the title page, "with best wishes Lyndon B. Johnson." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Rowland Scherman.
Johnson was sworn in as President during a period of healthy economic growth, low unemployment, and no serious controversies with major countries. His attention was therefore focused on domestic policy, and, after 1966, on the Vietnam War. Written early in Johnson's presidency, My Hope For America touches on the President's vision for American and his thoughts on the challenges of justice, the threat of communism, and the duty of the Democratic Party.
