Florio (1553–1625) was a prominent Anglo-Italian linguist, lexicographer, and translator whose work significantly shaped the development of English prose during the late Renaissance. Best known for his 1603 translation of Montaigne’s Essays, Florio introduced a richly idiomatic and rhetorically dynamic style that influenced contemporaries such as William Shakespeare.
Michel de Montaigne’s Essays, first published in 1580, represent a foundational work of early modern thought and a pioneering contribution to the development of the personal essay as a literary form. Drawing on classical philosophy, especially Stoicism and Skepticism, Montaigne explores a wide range of subjects—from friendship, education, and death to human nature and cultural relativism—through a self-reflective, digressive, and conversational style. His essays privilege introspection and intellectual honesty, presenting the self not as a fixed identity but as a fluid and evolving subject of inquiry. Montaigne's innovative blending of anecdote, philosophical reflection, and personal experience had a lasting influence on later writers such as William Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Virginia Woolf, and Friedrich Nietzsche.
