Rare 18th century printing of the Handel's Messiah as it was performed at the Theatre Royal in the Hay-Market. Ocravo, bound in contemporary wrappers. Handel composed Messiah in 1741. It was first performed in Dublin in 1742 and received its London premiere a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Housed in a custom half morocco and folding chemise slipcase.
George Frideric Handel’s Messiah is one of the most celebrated works in the history of Western music, often performed during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Composed in just 24 days in 1741, this English-language oratorio sets biblical texts compiled by Charles Jennens to music and is divided into three parts: the prophecy and birth of Christ, the passion and resurrection, and the promise of redemption. Known for its expressive arias and majestic choruses, the work combines sacred reverence with dramatic intensity, culminating in the famous “Hallelujah” chorus, which has become a symbol of joy and triumph. Handel’s Messiah continues to inspire audiences worldwide, embodying both the spiritual depth of scripture and the power of Baroque music.
