First edition of this comprehensive biographical portrait of one of Britain’s most influential botanists and founders of the Linnean Society, compiled by his widow Pleasance Smith. Octavo, two volumes, bound in half-cloth with paper titles to the spine. In near fine condition. Edited by Lady Smith.
James Edward Smith (1759–1828) was a British botanist, physician, and founding figure of modern systematic botany, best known as the founder and first president of the Linnean Society of London. After purchasing Carl Linnaeus’s scientific collections in 1784, Smith became the foremost interpreter and promoter of Linnaean taxonomy in Britain, helping to institutionalize natural history as a professional science. His extensive publications, including English Botany (1790–1814) and A Selection of the Correspondence of Linnaeus (1821), combined empirical precision with a humanistic approach to scientific communication.
