Medieval Gregorian chant manuscripts are liturgical manuscripts that preserve the core musical tradition of the Western Church between the ninth and fifteenth centuries, embodying both spiritual devotion and the evolution of written music. Containing repertories such as the Graduale Romanum, Antiphonale, and Kyriale, these books standardized the melodies and texts of the Roman rite, facilitating uniformity in worship across medieval Christendom. Their notation—initially composed of neumes and later incorporating staff lines—marks a critical stage in the history of musical literacy. Beyond their liturgical function, Gregorian chant books represent a synthesis of theology, art, and pedagogy, illustrating how sacred music shaped intellectual and cultural life in medieval Europe.
