Fine hand-colored example of Albrizzi's double hemisphere map of the World, one of the most elaborately decorated world maps to appear in mid-18th century Italy and a beautiful example of the Italian school of commercial cartography. One page, the map includes a finely executed armillary sphere, explorer's routes, unknown NW Coast of America, incomplete projections of Australia (still attached to New Guinea) and New Zealand, conjectural Asian Land mass extending toward Alaska and many other cartographic myths and misprojections. The cartographic content of the map was drawn from De l'Isle's Mappe Monde (1700), flanking artwork by important Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (ca. 1682-1754). In near fine condition. Matted. The map measures 14.75 inches by 12.5 inches. The entire piece measures 20 inches by 16.25 inches.
Giambattista Albrizzi (1698-1777) was a notable 18th-century Venetian publisher, patron, and collector, recognized as a leading figure in the city's intellectual and cultural scene. Following his father Girolamo, who established the family printing business, Giambattista published maps and books. He collaborated with artist Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, whose decorative elements enhanced their cartographic works. Albrizzi also published the weekly journal Novelle della Repubblica delle Lettere, important in Venetian intellectual and business spheres. His efforts aimed to revitalize Venetian publishing, which had declined since the late 17th century, contributing to the foundation of Italian decorative cartography in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Venice's role in the European map trade had lessened in the 17th and 18th centuries due to the rise of Dutch and German publishers.
