Rare second collected edition in English of Machiavelli's The Prince and Discourses on Livy, translated by Edward Dacres. Octavo, bound in full modern paneled calf retaining an early morocco spine label lettered in gilt, stamping to the spine in five compartments within raised gilt bands, engraved frontispiece portrait of Machiavelli. The first English translation of The Prince by Edward Dacres appeared in 1640. In 1661, Thomas Dring published an edition that included both The Prince and The Discourses on Livy. The present edition, in which The Prince again appears as the second part with a separate title page dated 1673, is the third English edition of The Prince, but only the second edition in which the two works were published together. In near fine condition with occasional toning to the text, closed tear to frontispiece.
