"My second wife left me because she said I was too ambitious. She didn't realize that it is only the dying who are free from ambition": First Edition of Graham Greene's Loser Takes All
First edition of this novella by Graham Greene. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a good dust jacket. Light bumping to the crown and foot of the spine, ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Some rubbing and a few losses to the extremities of the dust jacket with toning to the extremities, spine, front and rear panels.
'Loser Takes All' is a classic story of wealth and revenge at the cost of love. Mr. Bertram's ambition often gets in the way of his partners' romantic philosophy, a lesson he finally learns in the gamble to win back Cary's heart. A film based on the novella was made in 1956, starring Rossano Brazzi and Glynis Johns. A remake starring Robert Lindsay and Molly Ringwald was shot in 1990 and directed by James Scott.
