Led Zeppelin was a British rock band formed in London in 1968 whose nine studio albums, released over a decade of extraordinary creative productivity, established them as arguably the most influential and commercially dominant rock act of the 1970s and one of the defining forces in the entire history of popular music. The band comprised Robert Plant on vocals, Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass and keyboards, and John Bonham on drums, and their synthesis of blues, folk, Eastern musical traditions, hard rock, and psychedelia into a sound of unprecedented power, dynamism, and textural sophistication set a standard against which virtually every subsequent rock act measured itself. Their nine studio albums, beginning with the debut Led Zeppelin (1969) and culminating in In Through the Out Door (1979), produced a body of work encompassing "Whole Lotta Love," "Kashmir," "Black Dog," "Stairway to Heaven," and dozens of other recordings that have never left the cultural mainstream, and their live performances were celebrated as among the most powerful and improvisationally adventurous in the history of rock. The sudden death of John Bonham in September 1980 led the remaining members to dissolve the band immediately, a decision that precluded any commercial exploitation of their legacy through reunion touring in the manner of many of their contemporaries and that lent their catalog a integrity unusual in the rock business. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, their catalog has sold an estimated 300 million units worldwide, and their influence on the subsequent development of hard rock, heavy metal, alternative rock, and popular music as a whole has been as deep and as pervasive as that of any band of the rock era.
