First edition of one of the greatest tennis players of all time, William "Big Bill" Tilden's authoritative guide to lawn tennis for young players. Small octavo, original cloth, illustrated with eleven photographs. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication to his nephew, "Billy 3rd With love, Uncle Bill William T. Tilden 2nd 1922." With an original photograph of Tilden with French one of the biggest tennis stars of the 1920s, tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen, laid in and inscribed by Tilden on the verso, "Susie Longlegs, Pardon me Mlle Suzanne Lenglen & Silly Willie." Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. First editions in the dust jacket are rare, inscribed association copies exceptionally so.
Widely considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, William T. Tilden II broke a number of records throughout his career including winning six consecutive U.S. National Championship Men’s Singles titles and 13 consecutive Davis Cup matches. In 1920, he became the first American to win two consecutive Wimbledon championships. Tilden held the position of the World No. 1 player for six years from 1920 through 1925 and won 15 Major singles titles including ten Grand Slam events, one World Hard Court Championship and four Pro Slam tournaments. His matches typically drew large crowds and he was admired for his good looks, charm, and athletic technique.
