First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book which introduced the world to magical realism. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers by artist Cecilia Porras. Association copy, inscribed by the author in one of the earliest signatures we have seen on the front free endpaper, "Para Hector; nada más, Gabo -." Translated as "nothing more." The recipient, Héctor Rojas Herazo was a contemporary of García Márquez and an integral member of the same intellectual circle of writers and artists who reshaped Colombian literature in the mid-twentieth century. Their relationship was grounded in sustained intellectual exchange rather than direct collaboration, marked by mutual recognition and shared participation in the cultural networks of Colombia’s Caribbean coast and Bogotá’s literary scene. As a poet, novelist, essayist, and visual artist, Rojas Herazo engaged many of the same regional, historical, and social concerns that informed García Márquez’s work, particularly those rooted in Caribbean experience, while developing a distinct aesthetic orientation. His writing emphasized interiority, existential reflection, and formal discipline over narrative exuberance, offering a counterpoint to García Márquez’s expansive narrative imagination. Together, though pursuing divergent artistic paths, they contributed to a broader intellectual project that redefined Colombian literature, moving it beyond provincialism and ideological constraint and situating it within a modern, internationally resonant framework. Gabriel García Márquez frequently signed his name as Gabo, particularly when inscribing books for friends, colleagues, or admirers. While he was officially Gabriel García Márquez, "Gabo" (or sometimes "Gabito") was his widely known nickname throughout Latin America. He has been quoted as saying that prior to the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude, none of his books had sold more than 700 copies. Despite the poor sales and even after the success of Cien Anos de Soledad, Garcia Marquez described La Hojarasca as the favorite of his own works because of its spontaneity and honesty. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco and folding chemise slipcase. An exceptional association.
