Rare original pastel on paper portrait of the drawing's recipient, David Hayman. Inscribed by Kurt Vonnegut at the bottom left corner, "Dear David, You said you wanted a picture by me. But I haven't made any pictures for three or four years. Last night (New Year's Day, 1971) I suddenly made one. This is it. Cheers, Kurt Vonnegut Jr." The recipient, David Hayman, was a professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin. Renowned for his scholarship on James Joyce, Hayman was also a close associate of Kurt Vonnegut and interviewed him extensively, including a prominent feature in the Spring 1977 issue of The Paris Review. Matted and framed. In near fine condition. The entire piece measures 25 inches by 31.5 inches. From the collection of David Hayman.
With the great popular and critical success of Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat’s Cradle, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and his earlier novels, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. has emerged as a major American writer. He has also written plays, films, stories, essays, and personal journalism for McCall’s, Collier’s, The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and other popular magazines. Vonnegut’s unique blend of satire, science fiction, and moral inquiry has earned him a lasting place in American literature, with Slaughterhouse-Five widely regarded as a modern classic and Cat’s Cradle earning him a Hugo Award nomination. In 1991, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal, recognizing his contribution to American letters and his ability to confront profound questions of war, technology, and human dignity with dark humor and philosophical depth.
