John Donne (1572–1631) was a prominent English poet, preacher, and intellectual whose work helped define the metaphysical tradition in early modern literature and is renowned for both his poetry and prose. Educated at Oxford and the Inns of Court, Donne initially gained notoriety for his secular love poetry, marked by elaborate conceits and philosophical intensity. Later in life, after converting more fully to religious service, he became an influential Anglican cleric and eventually Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral. His sermons and devotional prose, such as Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, reveal a deep preoccupation with mortality, repentance, and the soul’s relationship with God.
