Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist, philanthropist, and writer whose life epitomized the complexities of capitalism, self-made success, and moral responsibility in the Gilded Age. Rising from humble origins as an immigrant laborer to become one of the wealthiest men in history through the expansion of the American steel industry, Carnegie later devoted his fortune to public causes, establishing libraries, universities, and cultural institutions worldwide.
