Rare 19th century autograph inscription from James A. Garfield, boldly signed in ink, "Very truly yours J.A. Garfield." In near fine condition with an antiquarian smudge to the writing above the inscription. Double-matted and framed with a large portrait of Garfield and an informational placard. The piece measures 28.25 inches by 18 inches.
James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination six and a half months later. He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington D.C. by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed and delusional office seeker.
