Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany (1857) by Miles Joseph Berkeley is a foundational text in the study of non-flowering plants, encompassing algae, fungi, lichens, mosses, and ferns. In this work, Berkeley—one of the foremost British mycologists and botanists of the nineteenth century—sought to systematize the classification and morphology of cryptogams at a time when microscopic observation and experimental mycology were transforming botanical science. Combining meticulous empirical study with theoretical synthesis, the book advanced understanding of plant reproduction, structure, and development beyond the flowering plants that had dominated earlier taxonomy.
