Robert Kaplan" The recipient, Madeleine K. Albright was the first woman to serve as the U.S. Secretary of State. She acted under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001, leading the United States through foreign policy in the Middle East with the endorsement of military action in Iraq. At the 1998 NATO summit, Albright coined the “3 Ds” of NATO, “which is no diminution of NATO, no discrimination and no duplication – because I think that we don’t need any of those three “Ds” to happen.” After her tenure as Secretary of State, she served as chair of the consulting Albright Stonebridge Group and was the Michael and Virginia Mortara Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. For Albright’s contributions to foreign policy and relations that defined a century, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. In Europe’s Shadow: Two Cold Wars and a Thirty-Year Journey Through Romania and Beyond by Robert D. Kaplan is a memoir and travelogue that examines the complex history and politics of Eastern Europe, particularly Romania, over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. Kaplan combines personal reflection with geopolitical analysis, drawing on his experiences as a journalist and his deep connections to the region. The book explores the legacy of both the Cold War and the post-Cold War era in shaping the political and cultural landscape of Eastern Europe. Kaplan reflects on the impact of historical events such as the rise of communism, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the challenges of post-communist transition. Through a detailed exploration of Romania, Kaplan offers broader insights into the tensions between Eastern and Western Europe, the persistence of authoritarianism, and the struggles for identity and sovereignty in the region. In Europe’s Shadow is both a personal narrative and a significant contribution to the understanding of Eastern European history and contemporary geopolitics.
