George Catlin’s Illustrations of the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians (first published in 1841) is a landmark ethnographic and artistic study documenting Catlin’s extensive travels among 48 Indigenous tribes across the North American West, during which he produced more than 600 paintings capturing daily life, ceremonial practices, and cultural material. Reissued repeatedly throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the work was celebrated for its unprecedented visual archive, with hundreds of engravings reproduced directly from Catlin’s original canvases under his supervision. Through detailed depictions of village life, dances, games, religious rituals, funerals, buffalo hunts, and traditional dress, accompanied by Catlin’s narrative commentary, the volumes created a rich, if at times romanticized, record of Native cultures at a moment of rapid and devastating colonial transformation.
