Hyperion (1989) is the first novel in Dan Simmons’s Hyperion Cantos, the celebrated science fiction saga set in the twenty-ninth century. On the eve of an interstellar war, seven pilgrims journey to the Time Tombs on the remote world of Hyperion, home of the Shrike, a monstrous figure of pain and destruction worshipped by the Church of the Final Atonement. Each pilgrim tells his or her own story along the way, a structure consciously modeled on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and the book’s title and much of its imagination draw on the poetry of John Keats. Hyperion won the 1990 Hugo Award for Best Novel and the 1990 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, and its story was continued in The Fall of Hyperion (1990).
