Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
"Less than a century since not a white man dwelt in the present lmits of the two counties, the history of which these pages chronicle. Now not an acre is unclaimed, and the eye sees the surface of the land dotted with comfortable homes. The Pioneers, whose lives are dimly portrayed in these pages, are the remote cause of all this; the labor of their children, the immediate cause. The aim of this volume is to preserve the deeds and lives of those who have done all this."
