Richard Cannon’s Historical Record of the Twenty-First Regiment (1849) is part of a broader mid-nineteenth-century project to compile official regimental histories of the British Army, documenting their origins, battles, and traditions. Commissioned by the War Office, Cannon’s volume traces the lineage and service of the 21st Regiment of Foot (later the Royal Scots Fusiliers), situating the unit within Britain’s imperial and military narrative. Combining chronological accounts of campaigns with details of uniforms, honors, and organizational changes, the work reflects Victorian interest in institutional memory and the valorization of military heritage.
