First edition of this collection of speeches. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication to the Governor of Minnesota, "With my thanks to a stalwart American, Honorable J.A.A. Burnquist with regards Calvin Coolidge November, 19, 19." The recipient, A.A. Burnquist served in the Minnesota State Legislature from 1909 to 1911, was elected the 20th Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota in 1912, and then served as the 19th Governor of Minnesota from December 30, 1915 to January 5, 1921. After leaving government for nearly 18 years to practice law, Burnquist returned to serve as Minnesota Attorney General from January 2, 1939 until January 3, 1955 — the second longest tenure of any individual to hold that position. In near fine condition. An excellent association copy.
Have Faith In Massachusetts includes documents, among them a telegram to Samuel Gompers, relating to the 1919 Boston police strike, during which Coolidge “upheld the city police commissioner’s decision to deprive the striking officers of their jobs… [and declared], ‘There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time.’ This [event] brought him national attention and overwhelming reelection as governor that fall” (ANB).
