Godey’s Lady’s Book (1830–1878) was one of the most influential American women’s magazines of the nineteenth century, shaping middle-class ideals of taste, fashion, and domestic life. Edited for decades by Sarah Josepha Hale, it combined original literature by prominent authors—often women—with hand-colored fashion plates, patterns for embroidery and dressmaking, and prescriptive essays on morality and family life. With a circulation that reached over 150,000 by the 1860s, the magazine functioned both as a cultural arbiter and as a vehicle for women’s literary expression, offering a blend of entertainment, education, and domestic guidance.
