George Washington (1900) is a two-volume biographical study by Worthington Chauncey Ford (1858–1941), one of the most distinguished documentary historians and editors of early American materials working at the turn of the twentieth century. Ford edited the first fifteen volumes of the Journals of the Continental Congress and the fourteen-volume Writings of George Washington (G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1889–1893), and served as editor of the Massachusetts Historical Society until his retirement in 1929 — a career of editorial scholarship that gave him an unmatched command of the primary sources underlying his biographical work. The biography traces Washington's decision to choose war against a powerful enemy rather than comfort and servitude, follows the challenge of forging a Continental Army from very little, and carries the narrative through the presidency and Washington's efforts to pacify the quarrels between Jefferson and Hamilton, rendering a life already familiar in its broad outlines with the documentary authority of a scholar who had spent years immersed in the manuscript record.
