Rare autograph letter signed and entirely in the hand of Nobel Prize-winning economist Friedrich August von Hayek to his son. One page, the letter is dated December 8, 1955 and reads, "My dear boy, I have long wanted to send you copies of the enclosed silhouettes which I had some time ago made for my brother. But since you will need more explanation of which of your ancestors they represent, they had to wait until I had time to do the... printed table of your ancestry I now enclose. I hope you will like to have them. Before this reaches you by surface mail you ought to have another letter which I hope to write soon. Love, Father." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, several typed and mimeographed family histories, family trees, and silhouettes. Hayek's son Laurence was born in Vienna and raised in London and Cambridge, England where his father worked for the London School of Economics. He studied medicine at King's college and worked as a pathologist at Middlesex Hospital. Following his retirement in 1999 he became involved in promoting his father's work. In near fine condition. A rare and intimate glance into Hayek's ancestry with noted provenance.
Austrian-British economist and philosopher Friedrich August von Hayek shared the 1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Gunnar Myrdal for his "pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena." Best known for his defense of classical liberalism, his account of how changing prices communicate information that helps individuals co-ordinate their plans is widely regarded as an important achievement in economics.
