Rare sepia-toned photograph of legendary American dancer Fred Astaire, inscribed by him to professional golfer Gene Sarazen, "To Gene - As far as I'm concerned - well 'I say Sarazen'! Fred A. 1932." Intensely private, Astaire was rarely seen on the Hollywood social scene. Instead, he devoted his spare time to his family and his hobbies, which included horse racing, playing the drums, songwriting, and golfing. In the early 1940s Astaire and Sarazen participated in the same WWII fundraising golf tour organized by George Von Elm with fellow participants including Humphrey Bogart, Gene Autry, Randolph Scott, and the Marx Brothers, which marked the beginning of a life-long friendship (Owen and Bingham, Lure of the Links, 22). In near fine condition. Framed. The entire piece measures 9.5 by 7.5 inches.
Widely considered the most influential dancer in the history of film, American performer Fred Astaire starred in more than ten Broadway and West End musicals, made 31 musical films, four television specials, and issued numerous recordings. As a dancer, his most outstanding traits were his uncanny sense of rhythm, his perfectionism, and his innovation. His most memorable dancing partnership was with Ginger Rogers, with whom he co-starred in a series of ten Hollywood musicals.
