First edition of this modern classic, basis for one of the most iconic films of the twentieth century, starring Tom Hanks. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "To Eugene Walter, Whose columns I enjoy reading weekly. Whose friendship I value, and whose reviews I treasure. All best Winston" and again signed below "Winston Groom Point Clear, April 10, 1986." Additionally signed by Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks on the front free endpaper. The recipient, Eugene Walter was best described by Pat Conroy, observing Walter lived a “pixilated wonderful life.” Labeled “Mobile’s Renaissance Man” he was a screenwriter, novelist, poet, actor, puppeteer, gourmet chef, cryptographer for the US Army, costume designer, translator and editor (notably he moved to Rome having been hired to edit the literary journal Botteghe Oscure). But he kept to his Alabama roots, carrying a shoebox full of Alabama Clay all around Europe. He was childhood friends with Truman Capote and was one of the pioneers of “happening” when he and his friends staged a spontaneous performance and the Museum of Modern Art. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Bill Creevy. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box by the Harcourt Bindery. An exceptional association and rare and desirable signed by Groom and Hanks.
