Additionally signed by Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks on the front free endpaper. The recipient, Eugene Walter was best described by Pat Conroy, observing Walter lived a “pixilated wonderful life.” Labeled “Mobile’s Renaissance Man” he was a screenwriter, novelist, poet, actor, puppeteer, gourmet chef, cryptographer for the US Army, costume designer, translator and editor (notably he moved to Rome having been hired to edit the literary journal Botteghe Oscure). But he kept to his Alabama roots, carrying a shoebox full of Alabama Clay all around Europe. He was childhood friends with Truman Capote and was one of the pioneers of “happening” when he and his friends staged a spontaneous performance and the Museum of Modern Art.
