Five Thousand Miles Around the Southern Cross by William Simon Long is a richly produced travelogue chronicling the author’s three-month journey through Cuba, Jamaica, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Yucatán, framed by the geopolitical optimism surrounding the opening of the Panama Canal. Intended to foster greater understanding among the nations of the Western Hemisphere, the book reflects Long’s belief that closer commercial and cultural ties between the Americas were both possible and desirable. With vivid, often lyrical descriptions, Long captures the landscapes, urban life, and social customs of each region, balancing tourist observation with historical background. His portrayals range from Havana’s glittering boulevards and working-class neighborhoods to the animated markets of Montego Bay and the lively plazas of Barranquilla. In San José, he is struck by the city’s modernity, while his time in Mexico includes detailed commentary on rail travel and a culminating focus on the ruins of ancient Yucatán.
