John Gierach (1946–2024) was an American essayist whose writing helped define contemporary angling literature through its blend of humor, technical knowledge, and philosophical reflection. Best known for books such as 'Trout Bum' and 'Fishing Bamboo', he framed fly fishing as both a practical craft and a way of seeing, using rivers and landscapes to explore themes of solitude, friendship, aging, and environmental awareness. 'Fishing Bamboo' is a reflective collection of angling essays that uses bamboo fly rods as a lens for exploring craftsmanship, tradition, and the lived experience of fly fishing. Blending humor with close observation, Gierach considers the aesthetic pleasures of bamboo—its feel, history, and association with classic tackle—while recounting fishing trips that emphasize patience, weather, friendship, and the unpredictability of water.
