First trade edition of Willy Pogany's magnificently illustrated rendition of Faust. Quarto, original publisher's cloth decorated in gilt, illustrated with 30 colored plates by Pogany, each with lettered tissue-guard. Signed by Willy Pogany on the front free endpaper. In very good condition.
Hungarian children's book illustrator Willy Pogany remains best known for his pen and ink drawings of myths and fables. Heavily fairy-tale orientated and often featuring motifs of mythical animals such as nymphs and pixies, his style is a fine example of Art Nouveau. Pogany illustrated more than 150 volumes including The Golden Fleece, Gulliver's Travels, The Adventures of Odysseus, and Goethe's Faust.
